The DP core01

Six good subject grades
are not a diploma.

Most explanations of the IB stop at subjects and points. What actually separates the diploma from other school-leaving qualifications sits outside the six subjects — theory of knowledge, the extended essay and CAS. None of the three is optional, and a candidate missing any one of them does not receive the diploma.

This page sets out what each of them is, what a student spends two years actually doing, and what to ask a school about them. Every figure comes from the IB’s own published documents.

Points02

Where 45 points come from.

The maximum is 45. Forty-two of those come from six subjects; the remaining three come from the core. The first thing to understand is that the core is on the scoreboard.

Six subjects1–7 each · 42 maximum
Core (EE + TOK)3 maximum
Total45
Minimum to pass24

HL and SL count equally in the final total. The IB recommends 240 teaching hours for HL subjects and 150 for SL.

The three core points are set by the TOK and EE grades together.

Rows are the extended essay grade, columns theory of knowledge. The figure in each cell is what the core adds.
EE \ TOK ABC DE
A3322Failing condition
B3221Failing condition
C2210Failing condition
D2100Failing condition
EFailing condition

An E in either theory of knowledge or the extended essay is a failing condition in itself. The core does not simply score zero — however high the total, no diploma is awarded. The IB did not put the core there as decoration.

The IB’s own example — a candidate with a B in theory of knowledge and a C in the extended essay is awarded 2 core points. CAS carries no grade; the school judges whether it is complete.

TOK03

TOK — how we know what we know.

Theory of knowledge. Not a subject for acquiring new knowledge, but two years spent looking back at what a student already knows and at how different disciplines arrive at knowledge at all. One question sits under all of it — “How do we know that?”

Essay · external · 67%

1,600 words, marked by IB examiners.

The IB issues six prescribed titles for each examination session and the student answers one. It is marked by IB examiners, not by the school — which is to say it sits outside the school’s grading altogether. Ten hours are recommended.

Exhibition · internal · 33%

Three objects, and why they matter.

The student chooses three objects and writes a commentary on each, showing how theory of knowledge shows up in the world outside the classroom. The teacher marks it and the IB moderates externally at the end of the course. Eight hours are recommended.

What is actually studied.

Areas of knowledge · all five

History · human sciences · natural sciences · the arts · mathematics

Fifty hours minimum. How each field reaches what it claims to know, what those methods share and where they part.

Core theme

Knowledge and the knower.

Thirty-two hours minimum. The student as a knower and a thinker, and what the communities they belong to take for granted.

Optional themes · two of five

Technology · language · politics · religion · indigenous societies

Two chosen from five, each examined for its relationship to knowledge.

Real prescribed titles read like this. “How important are the opinions of experts in the search for knowledge? Answer with reference to the arts and one other area of knowledge.” · “When historians and natural scientists say that they have explained something, are they using the word ‘explain’ in the same way?” · “How do our expectations impact our interpretations? Discuss with reference to history and one other area of knowledge.”
There is no single right answer to any of them. This is precisely the kind of thinking a university interview and a personal statement ask for.

Extended essay04

The extended essay —
4,000 words, written alone.

The student chooses the topic and a qualified member of the school’s staff supervises. It is written as a formal piece of academic work and assessed externally by the IB. It is the kind of writing most people first meet at university, done once while still at school.

Topic

One subject, or two combined.

It can sit inside a single DP subject or take an interdisciplinary approach combining two. The choice belongs to the student.

Length

4,000 words is the ceiling.

That limit includes the introduction, body, conclusion and any quotations. References and the bibliography sit outside it.

Supervision

Three formal meetings with the supervisor.

Three are mandatory. A student who gets stuck is not left alone with it — at set points they sit down and reset the direction. The IB calls these reflection sessions: not progress checks, but a look back at what has been learned.

The end

It finishes with a conversation.

The third meeting is the viva voce — ten to fifteen minutes, one to one with the supervisor. It checks academic integrity, looks back at what went well and what did not, and draws out what the student learned. An essay someone else wrote does not survive it.

On record

A 500-word reflection.

At the end the student writes 500 words for the Reflection and Progress Form. That form also records whether they attended each of the three meetings.

CAS05

CAS — worth zero points,
and required to graduate.

Creativity, activity, service. The only part of the core with no grade at all — and without it there is no diploma. The IB describes it as a counterbalance to the academic pressure of the programme: two years of activity that never appears as a number, held in place as a graduation requirement.

Creativity

Making things.

The arts, and any experience that calls for creative thinking.

Activity

Moving.

Physical exertion that contributes to a healthy life — a counterweight to the hours at a desk.

Service

Doing something for someone else.

Unpaid and voluntary, with a genuine learning benefit for the student, and with the rights, dignity and autonomy of everyone involved respected.

The project

At least one has to be built.

Alongside the experiences, at least one CAS project is required. It asks the student to show initiative, to demonstrate perseverance, and to develop skills such as collaboration, problem solving and decision making. It may address one strand, or combine two or all three.

How it is recognised

Reflection and evidence.

There is no examination. Instead the student reflects on the experiences and provides evidence of achieving the seven learning outcomes. The school judges completion — which is why how well a school connects a boarder to real opportunities is what actually differs between schools.

Two years06

How the two years run.

Parents usually want to know something more specific than whether the programme is good: when does it get hard? This is the order the three core elements arrive in.

Grade 11 · first halfGrade 11 · second half Grade 12 · first halfGrade 12 · second half

EE4,000-word essay Topic chosen Supervisor meeting ① Supervisor meeting ② Viva voce · 10–15 min Submitted

ExamsExternal assessment Six subject examinations

No months are shown. The IB does not publish a fixed calendar and each school sets its own internal deadlines. What is documented is the order — three meetings with the last one a viva voce, CAS running throughout, TOK assessed by an exhibition and an essay. The actual months are a question for the school.

How to read it — the second half of Grade 12 carries all of it at once. The viva voce and the essay submission, the TOK essay and the final examinations land in the same stretch. Which is why the gap between a student who chose an essay topic early in Grade 11 and one who put it off only becomes visible in the last term.

What differs07

So what is different.

This is not an argument that other qualifications are worse. It is a description of how this one is built. Four things are true at once.

01

The core sits outside the six subjects. It is not something a good choice of subjects or a strong exam season takes care of. It runs alongside, for two years.

02

It is on the scoreboard. Three points out of 45. Near the top of the range, three points changes which universities are open.

03

It is a failing condition. An E in theory of knowledge or the extended essay means no diploma regardless of the total. Incomplete CAS does the same.

04

It is marked outside the school. The extended essay is externally assessed, the TOK essay is marked by IB examiners, and the TOK exhibition is externally moderated. None of it is somewhere a school can be generous.

So an IB diploma is not a sum of subject grades. It is subjects, plus a piece of research the student ran alone, plus a habit of asking how we know, plus something done outside the classroom, issued as one qualification. Universities reading an IB result know that is what they are reading.

For parents08

What a parent actually sees.

The core runs across Grades 11 and 12. Here is what changes in a student’s week, and what to ask a school about it.

What changes

Suddenly a great deal is theirs to decide.

Choosing an essay topic. Choosing three objects for a TOK exhibition. Deciding what CAS will be. None of these has a set answer and all of them are the student’s to make. This is the transition some students take easily and others find hard, and it is where they separate.

What matters

How closely the school stays with them.

The content of the core is identical at every IB school in the world. What differs is supervision density — how a supervisor is assigned, how deadlines are held, whether a boarder is connected to real service opportunities. This is where a small school earns its size.

Six questions worth asking a school.

01

How is an extended essay supervisor assigned? Is it matched to the subject the student chose?

02

In which grade and month does theory of knowledge begin?

03

How far ahead of the IB deadline does the school set its own?

04

Is there a member of staff responsible for CAS?

05

For an international boarder, does the school arrange service placements, or does the student find them?

06

What were the recent session’s average points and core points distribution?

SSP asks partner schools these questions and puts the answers in front of a family in Korean. If you need an answer for a particular grade and situation, write to us — info@studentsuccesspath.com

Core

TOK, EE, CAS.

Core (EE + TOK)

Theory of Knowledge.

Extended Essay.

Creativity, Activity, Service.

Creativity

Activity

Service
