Who it suits01

It suits some students.
It does not suit others.

The IB diploma is open to any student aged 16 to 19. There is no entrance bar. But open and suitable are not the same thing.

Both sides are set out below. The second column matters more — knowing early that it is the wrong fit is worth more than finding out after two years.

Side by side02

Side by side.

It fitsRecommended
  • Starting in Grade 8 or 9 Two or three years before the IB decision has to be made. Time to bring English up, to see how the school works, and then choose. The most comfortable entry there is.
  • A student who enjoys questions without one answer Theory of knowledge and the essay ask nothing else for two years. A student who is happiest memorising will find it heavy going.
  • A student who needs practice deciding things The topic, the subjects, the activity — all chosen by the student. It suits a family that wants that training.
  • A family ready to see it through This is the whole programme, not one year. Changing route partway does not carry forward what has been built.
  • A family serious about English The reading and writing load is heavy. English has to become a tool rather than a subject for a student to keep up.
It does not fitNot a fit
  • Arriving new in Grade 11 The DP starts in earnest in Grade 11. Arriving at that moment means settling in and starting the programme at the same time, and the path rarely holds together.
  • A short language stay This is a multi-year programme. It is the wrong instrument for a term or a year.
  • Wanting the diploma guaranteed It cannot be guaranteed. It is marked externally, and a lowest grade in theory of knowledge or the essay means no diploma whatever the total. Anyone promising a guarantee is promising something that is not theirs to give.
  • Wanting grades up quickly and nothing else The required work outside the subjects takes real time. If the only goal is a transcript, this structure is inefficient.
  • Wanting a large Korean community nearby Continued in the next section.

Small-town boarding03

Where a small-town
boarding school earns it.

There is more than one way to do the IB — as a day student in a city, from a homestay, or boarding in a small town. The last one suits a particular kind of student for particular reasons.

English

With no alternative,
English becomes the day.

The worry families raise most often is a single one — that three years later the child is still speaking their first language. That is not a school problem; it is an environment problem. Where there is a large community from home, a day can pass without English. In a small town that option does not exist.

Density

The core is decided
by who sits with them.

Choosing an essay question, resetting direction when it stalls, holding the deadlines. The content is identical at every IB school in the world; supervision density is not. At a small school, the student and the parent know the supervisor by name.

Hours

Evenings and weekends
are not empty.

Boarding means more than a bed. There is an adult at evening study, a weekend that is planned, and someone to call when a student is ill. The hours a family would otherwise have to fill themselves are filled by the school.

Service

The school makes
the introductions.

Where service has to be found by the student, an international boarder is at a disadvantage — no local knowledge, no transport. A boarding school embedded in a small community can make that connection itself.

Read the other way: a family that wants a city and a community from home should not choose a small town. That is not a compromise, it is a different product, and establishing which one a family wants is the first order of business in a conversation.

Before deciding04

Before deciding.

When working out whether a student is on the right side of this, these are the questions to put to a school.

01

Which entry grade makes the path to the IB most natural?

02

Is there provision inside the curriculum for a student whose English is still developing?

03

Is there a route to graduation other than the full IB diploma? What does it award?

04

How is an essay supervisor assigned, and when is the school’s own deadline?

05

For an international boarder, does the school arrange service placements?

SSP puts these questions to its partner schools and brings the answers back in Korean. If you need an answer for a particular grade and situation, write to us — info@studentsuccesspath.com

Recommended
Not a fit

Core
