What is IB?01
The IB is not an exam.
It is a curriculum
a school is authorised to teach.
International Baccalaureate. Not a national ministry but a non-profit foundation based in Switzerland, running to the same standard everywhere. A school has to be authorised before it can teach it, and a school that is authorised is called an IB World School.
What people usually mean by “IB” is the final two years — the Diploma Programme. It is the only one of the four that produces a qualification a student sends to a university.
The four programmes02
Laid out by age.
Four programmes cover ages 3 to 19. A school may run all of them or only one. The overlaps are not an error — they are the design, and which way a student goes is decided with the school.
SSP’s partner schools open boarding from Grade 8. So the stretch a family actually deals with is the back half of the MYP and the two years of the DP. That is the dashed band.
DP — the diploma
Six subjects plus the three core elements, scored out of 45. Subject examinations are marked by IB examiners, so a school cannot be generous with them. Twenty-four points earns the diploma.
MYP — the middle years
A framework for ages 11 to 16. Nothing from it is sent to a university. It is where a student connects what they study to the world outside and practises managing their own learning. The IB states that students who come through the MYP do better in DP examinations.
The MYP is not well known in Korea. If a family has been told about an “IB middle school”, this is usually it.
How the DP is built03
How the DP is built.
One subject from each of six groups, and three required elements outside them. Subjects alone do not produce a diploma.
One from each of six.
Studies in language and literature · language acquisition · individuals and societies · sciences · mathematics · the arts. A second subject from another group may replace the arts.
Three at HL, three at SL.
Three subjects studied in depth and three more broadly. The IB recommends 240 teaching hours for HL and 150 for SL. Both count equally in the final total.
TOK · EE · CAS.
Interrogating how we know what we know, writing a 4,000-word essay alone, and doing something outside the classroom. All three are required and three of the 45 points come from them.
A student can do well in all six subjects and still not receive the diploma without the core. The core in detail →

Why IB.
Same paper, same marking. Why a grade set outside the school reads differently.
Who it suits.
It fits some students and not others. Both sides are written down.
International Baccalaureate.
TOK · EE · CAS.
