Why IB01
Universities know
who marked the transcript.
School grades are set to different standards at different schools. From outside, there is no way to tell whether a 90 at one school means what a 90 means at another. The IB diploma answers that differently — students across the world sit the same papers in the same session, and IB examiners mark them, not the school.
So an IB score does not borrow a school’s reputation. A 38 from a small school is the same 38 as a 38 from a famous one.
Scale02
How widely it runs.
Figures published by the IB, as of August 2026.
Source: ibo.org statistics, August 2026. On university recognition the IB’s own wording is that the programme is “respected by universities across the globe”. It publishes no admission-rate or bonus-point figures, and neither do we.
What is different03
Three things are different.
Not an argument that other qualifications are worse — a description of how this one is built.
Set outside the school.
Subject examinations are marked by IB examiners. The 4,000-word essay is externally assessed and the TOK essay is marked by the IB. None of it is somewhere a school can lift a grade.
The same in another country.
The same programme runs in more than 160 countries. A student who moves mid-course does not lose it, and the result means the same thing where they land.
Not only subjects.
Outside the six subjects sit a research paper, a course in how we know things, and activity beyond the classroom — all required. The judgement that universities want more than grades is built into the programme.
Where the number sits04
Where that number
actually sits.
The IB publishes statistics for each session. These are from May 2026.
Source: IB statistical bulletin, May 2026 (provisional). The final May 2025 mean was 30.6. The IB publishes bands of five points only and has not released the number of candidates scoring 45 since 2023. Canadian schools sit the May session.
A school average and an individual ranking are different things. A school whose graduates averaged 35 is not thereby in the “top 31%”. The 31.3% above is the distribution of individual candidates; a school average is a mean of many students and behaves differently. We compare averages only with averages.
And 24 is not simply a pass mark. In the May 2026 session at least 4,011 candidates scored 24 or more and still did not receive the diploma. Eight separate conditions sit alongside the total, and missing one is enough — three or more grades at 2 or below, fewer than 12 points at HL, an E in theory of knowledge or the extended essay, or incomplete CAS. The eight conditions →
The application05
What goes into
a university application.
We are not going to tell you the IB makes admission easier. The IB publishes no figure for that and neither have we verified one. What is certain is narrower and more useful: there is something to put in each field.
We will talk about employment the same way. Here is what the IB itself says a CAS project asks of a student: to show initiative, to demonstrate perseverance, and to develop skills such as collaboration, problem solving and decision making. How that reads on a CV is for the reader to judge, and not something we will promise in numbers.
What stays06
And what stays with the student.
Take the points out of it and something is still left. In practice it lasts longer.
Choosing your own question. The student picks the subject of the 4,000-word essay. For anyone who has only ever answered set problems, this is the biggest change of all.
The habit of asking how we know. That is what theory of knowledge does for two years, and it is the same thinking a university interview and a written application are looking for.
Time away from the desk is a graduation requirement. CAS carries no points, and without it there is no diploma. The programme has made it impossible to spend two years on academics alone.
